What is one red paperclip worth?

A house. Yes, a house. Kyle MacDonald, a young man from Canada, started with a red paperclip and traded it for bigger and better things until he owned a house. His inspiration was his childhood game: Bigger, Better. Instead of getting a job to buy a house, he decided to make use of the red paperclip on his desk and trade it up to a house.

MacDonald made his first trade on July 14, 2005. He traded his paperclip for a fish-shaped pen. The whole process of his trades is as below.

A year later, he became a house owner in Kipling, Saskatchewan. He reached his goal of owning a house with just 14 transactions, starting from a red paperclip.

This is indeed an inspirational story, but what can we learn from it? Everything is possible, all you need to do is to try. It is not about the paperclip in this story, it is about the spirit. Do not afraid of getting out of your comfort zone, it might just be a life changing step that leads to an amazing journey. If MacDonald had not trade away that red paperclip, he will be sitting on his desk, holding a paperclip in his hand, wondering what would happen if he did something with the paperclip. But today, he is spending majority of his time doing public speaking engagements, publishing books, and inspiring people. Can you imagine this? Just go ahead and chase your dreams, so what if we failed? Do not afraid of failure because it is the greatest barrier to success. You may only learn to succeed by going through failure.
